Sustainability Initiatives

At Hidden Bench we believe that we are only the stewards of our lands. Therefore, part of our philosophy is to have the smallest impact possible on the environment. In furtherance of this environmental mission we have instituted a number of initiatives that we believe will reduce our footprint and assist with the recovery of the environment.

SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES

We use geothermal energy to provide heating and cooling for both our building and winemaking processes. This system uses the temperature differential of one of our ponds coupled with 9000 ft of heat exchange coil and 7 heat pumps to provide the equivalent of 35 tonnes of cooling and heating with minimal environment impact and substantially reduced energy consumption.

We have installed a 105 panel/23.5kW solar array on our storage building which permits us to reduce our reliance on the electrical grid and to be energy cost neutral on an annual basis.

Hidden Bench was one of the launch customers for Bullfrog Power, Ontario’s first green electricity company. Bullfrog Power sources all of its electricity from wind turbine, solar and non-interventionist hydroelectric power and, as such, our additional power requirements have a minimal impact on the environment.

While you visit Hidden Bench feel free to use our complimentary EV charging station which allows for our customers with both Tesla and vehicles with universal charging connections to get a top up.

Wherever possible Hidden Bench only uses recycled materials in its product packaging to reduce our impact on the environment. Additionally, we only package our wines at the point of sale to reduce the associated environmental impact.

The foregoing initiatives as well as our ongoing approach to sustainability has permitted Hidden Bench Estate Winery to be recognized as an environmental leader in our community in addition to being a certified sustainable winery.
