Hidden Bench History

Hidden Bench Vineyards and Winery is an artisanal winery dedicated to producing ultra premium wines solely from vineyards situated within the Beamsville Bench VQA sub- appellation. Non-interventionist, quality focused and terroir driven Hidden Bench wines are produced from three distinct vineyards totaling almost 100 acres within the Beamsville Bench VQA sub-appellation. As an estate winery all of our wines are produced with only vinifera grapes grown in our own vineyards.

Founded in 2003 by Harald Thiel and family, Hidden Bench is a quality driven, terroir based winery whose varietal focus is Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling. In addition we also produce limited quantities of a white meritage, Nuit Blanche, and two distinct red blends, Terroir Cache, and the super premium La Brunante. Our 2005 production was approximately 3,000 cases and we anticipate that total production will eventually reach a maximum of about 8,000 cases in 2010. Due to strong demand and a small supply most wines are already on limited allocations.

Although we produced wine in the 2004 vintage, we declassified the total production and sold the unfinished wine as we did not believe that the wines merited the Hidden Bench name. This was a costly action but we believe it was reflective and a good example of our uncompromising commitment to quality. Hidden Bench will only bottle wines which we believe merit our name, our wines will be priced annually to reflect the quality of the vintage as well as the quality of the individual wine.

Uncompromising in quality we use the latest technology and equipment in our 6,000 sq.ft winery. Sourced from the leading international and domestic suppliers this state of the art technology permits our winemaking team, to make small batch wines respecting the traditions of non-interventional winemaking with the gentlest possible handling techniques.

Equipment alone cannot make great wine. We searched far and wide to build our winemaking, viticulture  and sales and marketing team applying the same uncompromising quality criteria to the hiring of the key members of our team.

We invite you to join us and to share the fruit of our labours by joining either the Terroir or Estate Wine clubs or by visiting us to taste, discover and possibly purchase some of our fine wine. We are convinced that you will not be disappointed and will easily identify what Terroir, Technology, Sustainability, and Passion can produce. Santé!
